When It Comes to Senior Cat Care, Less Is Not More

If you’ve been the proud owner of a cat for many years, it’s probably time to consider their aging process if you haven’t already. Cats age faster than we do, and as a result, they benefit from routine wellness checks every 6 months once they hit the age of 8. Increasing their annual exams from 1 to 2 times a year helps to prevent age-related issues and detect health conditions before they become serious.
Senior cat care doesn’t have to be stressful, and once you know what to expect, you and your cat can move toward the golden years together.
First, a Glance at Feline Behavior
Feline behavior can range from distinctly direct to bafflingly subtle. For this reason, it’s always a good idea to closely watch your cat for even the slightest departure from their routines or behavioral patterns. They may otherwise be acting “normally”, but an owner’s intuition and observations can truly lead a cat to getting the help they need.
Remember, your notes, no matter how minor they might seem, can shine a light on developing illness or injury that require immediate attention. Take stock of your senior cat’s hearing, vision, appetite, mobility, interaction levels, litter box habits, sleeping, and cognition for clues about their well being.
Covering the Bases
Each time we have the pleasure of visiting with your cat, getting their weight is one of the first things we do. Feline obesity is becoming a common diagnosis among senior cats, but weight loss can also signal a problem. Maintaining an ideal weight throughout all the life stages is an important key to a cat’s longevity and quality of life. Because nutritional needs change as cats age, we may make diet recommendations to ensure ideal body condition.
Senior Cat Care Visits
Owners are sometimes caught unaware when it comes to the intensity of senior cat wellness exams. Because age-related illness is more likely, we do our best to ensure that the following common issues remain on the periphery:
- Diabetes
- Arthritis
- Cancer
- High blood pressure
- Organ failure
- Thyroid problems
- Kidney disease
- GI problems
- Cognition
To that end, we run diagnostic tests occasionally to be sure that your senior cat’s health is where it should be for their age. Complete blood panels (including screenings for kidney and liver function), urinalysis, thyroid hormone levels, and more can help us understand the bigger picture of senior cat care.
Healthy Teeth and Gums
The importance of dental care cannot be overstated. Responsible for so much more than just a clean mouth, routine professional cleanings and daily brushing at home may add years to a cat’s life. Left alone, plaque and tartar can lead to oral infections, tooth loss, and erosion of gum tissue. What’s more, oral bacteria can seep into the bloodstream and infect the major organs.
Periodontal (gum) disease may be a slow-moving degenerative disease, but it is 100% preventable. Known to cause significant pain for older cats, it makes sense to try and get in front of any issues in the mouth.
Senior Cat Care at Home
Owners might have to make certain changes at home to accommodate the needs of an aging cat. Despite their interest in sleeping as much as possible, senior cats thrive in engaging environments and should always have opportunities to play, hunt, and learn new things.
Also, making their litter box, food/water bowls, and bed more accessible is important as mobility decreases.
Here For You
Senior cat care isn’t without certain challenges, but we can assure that providing for all your aging cat’s needs is extremely rewarding.
As always, please let us know how we can help you. We’re always here for you and your cat at Cat Care of Vinings.

The quality of treatment and unbelievable care with which my kitten was treated are priceless to me especially as kitten moves into her later years. I wouldn’t take her anywhere else.
The staff are always welcoming and hospitable. Doctors will go out of their way to make sure your cat is taken care of and comfortable. They always return your calls and even call to check up on your cat after an appointment.
Knowledgeable, caring vets and a very supportive team. Highly recommended based on my personal experiences…
At Cat Care of Vinings, every person…demonstrated care. Everything was well explained… I received phone calls updating me on his progress and asking how he was after I took him home. They are compassionate and knowledgeable about cats and that is what really matters.
CCV is a warm, quiet environment that helps my nervous cat feel more comfortable… The vet techs and office staff are skilled, helpful and friendly. A+
…more information than the previous…places… Also,…we did not feel like they were pressuring us into paying for expensive procedures that may or may not work… [They] actually showed care and concern for our kitty…
Cat Care is exactly what it says. The whole office is geared toward all felines… There are cat trees, and cat friendly furniture throughout. But is what is more important is the feline expertise…
Where do I begin? There are so many positives about Cat Care of Vinings…this entire practice is on a whole other level… The environment is relaxing and the staff are comforting and supportive.
These people love your pet almost as much as you do… This seems less like a business and more like a labor of love. [They]…always keep you in the loop of what is happening…and put both you and your pet at ease…providing first rate care for you cat.
I have had cats my whole life and have used many veterinarians over the years. Cat Care of Vinings provides the best care I have ever received for my 'kids' - cats
The veterinarians and staff here are very professional, caring and thorough (they check for things other vet clinics don’t). They genuinely love their clients (i.e. cats)…
This veterinary clinic changed my cat's entire life…[he had] severe dental problems… I was reluctant to…do the procedures… I cannot stress how happy I am… Everyone treats the cats with love and care, and they treat the people with respect and offer great advice.
The Vets have taken time to know and understand both my kitties. All clinic staff are caring, knowledgeable, and generally first rate.
Dr. Michael Friedlander is experienced, capable, kind, and caring with my cat and with me. Her staff is also excellent. Besides the excellent care for my cat, Michael also educated me on what I need to do to take care of my cat, such as vaccinations and heart worm prevention. This is a top notch feline veterinary hospital with a top notch staff!
I was shocked at how little we knew even after more than a decade of cat ownership and regular vet visits. I really can't say enough about how thrilled we are with Dr. Palmer and Cat Care of Vinings. We just feel so fortunate to have you in our lives and are most grateful. Thank you all for all that you do! :-)
…We must say that Dr. Jennifer Palmer…is the BEST. Her medical experience, bedside manner, candor, and quest for knowledge…is immeasurable. She goes beyond the call of duty to ‘reach-out’ for answers and health options you may not be aware of.
I am extremely fortunate to have taken her to Cat Care of Vinings… They take time to listen…answer questions, offer guidance…compassion, and give frequent and welcome updates.
